The Garden of Love in Miniature

Period works on an intimate scale suggesting fantasy characters inhabiting the Garden of Love. The dances in this performance are inspired by the themes in miniature and nature seen frequently in Baroque art. For the Baroque noble, the latter offered opportunities to be in nature, to show off and be seen, be with a lover, and commune with one’s private thoughts. The fantasy characters draw upon romanticized images of the unicorn tapestries from the collection of the Met Museum, circa 1500, and the idyllic pastoral scenes painted by François Boucher, 1703–1730, as well as the Baroque dance notations: Bourrée de Achilles, Bourrée de Percée, Sarabande pour Femme, Gigue pour Homme, Le Passapied, circa 1701. These choreographies by Baroque Dance Masters — Louis Pecour and Raul-Auger Fueillet — were used to discover BALAM’s stylized historically informed choreography.
