Perform in BLEMF 2009

Our program committee has completed the Bloomington Early Music Festival for May 2009.  However, you may choose to present your program as a fringe concert.
In order to become a fringe concert, several things must be considered:
Your concert must be scheduled at times that do not conflict with the BLEMF ticketed concerts nor the rehearsal times of these concerts. You will be more likely to have a larger audience if you choose among the following times, however you may choose any time as long as there are no conflicts:

           * Saturday, May 16 afternoon

           * Sunday, May 17 evening

           * Thursday, May 21 evening

           * Saturday, May 23 afternoon

           * Sunday, May 24 evening

Your concert will be arranged by you solely (i.e. finding a venue, arranging rehearsal times).
Your concert will not be a ticketed concert in the BLEMF ticket package.
Please notify BLEMF when you can verify your arrangements as soon as possible.  We want to make sure there are no conflicts with the BLEMF ticketed program and want to post your program on our website.
Finally, you may submit your program to the BLEMF office by April 1st in order for it to be printed in the BLEMF Festival booklet for a fee of $25.00.

Photos of BLEMF 2008

Once again, local photographer Kevin Atkins has done a fabulous job of documenting the festival. You can view the images by visiting Kevin's website. There are small images that link to large images.
Photos of the opera by set designer Seamus Bourne are also available for viewing by visiting Seamus' website. These are large images.

Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are needed for ushering and ticket taking. This is a fun way to help out the festival and attend a great concert.

The Georgina Joshi Foundation

Through the vision of Georgina’s mother, Louise Addicott, The Georgina Joshi Foundation, Inc. was established in 2007 as a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation to provide, among other things, educational and career development opportunities for young musicians and singers and to encourage and support the public performance of music.

In addition to providing instruments and resources that enable even greater artistic accomplishment by established and emerging artists, the Foundation has supported the creation of some remarkable and imaginative music products.  The following are some of the most recent examples.  Earlier this spring Indiana University’s New Music Ensemble premiered the performance of Adam Haws’ “Ascension, 2008”.  Haws thus became the first recipient of the Georgina Joshi Composition Commission Prize.  And on March 29 IU’s ProArte Singers premiered the performance of John Harbison’s “A Clear Midnight” – a cantata commissioned by the Foundation.  On May 17 the South Bend Chamber Singers will be performing The tide rises, the tide falls, a piece commissioned in honor of Louise Addicott.  Earlier this year, the Foundation provided general underwriting to the Jacobs School of Music for its production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare . This underwriting also enabled JSOM to bring Eiddwen Harrhy, an expert in Handel opera performance, from Royal College of Music (London) to IU for a series of masterclasses in Handel. It is clear that the passion and joy expressed by Georgina for all forms of music is continuing with The Georgina Joshi Foundation, Inc.

It is therefore with deep respect that BLEMF dedicates the support provided by the Georgina Joshi Foundation to three events of this year’s Festival.  Each event features emerging artists whose work merited full inclusion in the 2009 Festival.

On Sunday, May 17, Shuann Chai, a young fortepianist who thrilled BLEMF listeners two years ago, will perform works by Schubert, Czerny, and Beethoven.

On Monday, May 18, the “outstanding student recitalist of the year,” as judged by the EMI faculty, will perform.  Jonathan Oddie’s amazing performance of Bach’s Goldberg Variations inaugurated the “best recitalist” event in last year’s BLEMF Festival.

On Monday, May 25, Linda Pearse’s ¡Sacabuche! ensemble will perform music for voices and trombones (sackbuts) by Usper, Monteverdi and others.  ¡Sacabuche! has won an opportunity to present in June a fringe concert at the celebrated Boston Early Music Festival.

BLEMF plans to select, in subsequent festivals, one or more outstanding events featuring emerging artists to receive Foundation support.
